Here is what occurred at our second-to-last Meteorology Club meeting this afternoon:

We are planning a social event on the evening of Thursday, June 4th (the very last day of classes, and not quite late enough that finals need to be thought of yet). We are trying to have a cookout because last year’s was such a success, and are looking for someone who has a grill they would like to loan us. We are thinking about having it at Stroud’s Run, and we’ll keep you updated with any potential times/places.

Amending the constitution: we are eliminating Events Coordinator and Fundraising chair positions. They are now combined with Treasurer/Social Chair.

Goals we have for Fall quarter that we would like to get finished by Winter quarter (a to-do list for members next year):
1. Increase membership through the student involvement fair, speaking at geography classes, passing out magnets/flyers. Goal: 25 members.
2. Establish ourselves as an AMS chapter is not done, so by Spring of 2009
1. Eventually create a poster display at the next AMS Conference
3. Establish some sort of community outreach program; for example, informing the general public about dangerous weather events.
4. Establish a storm spotter training program at OU.
5. Getting OU Storm Ready.
1. Jill Harris is the x factor
2. Making sure we have the required funds to complete this task
6. Getting the Scalia forecasts displayed at Baker Center.
1. To do so, get a hold of the right personnel either late Spring Quarter 2009 or early Fall Quarter 2009.
7. Increase the financial status of the club:
1. Through SAC funding
2. Fundraising
i. Forecast competitions
ii. Selling shirts/hoodies
8. Increase non-club involvement
1. Weather photo competition (could also be a fundraiser)
9. Increase club social activities
1. Socials
2. Conferences
i. AMS in January 2010 (Atlanta, GA)
ii. NWA Annual Conference in Norfolk?
iii. Northeast Storm Conference?
3. Tours
i. NWS facilities (Charleston, WV)
4. More trips in general
i. Camping/hiking for a weekend
ii. Putt-putt golfing
5. Public speakers
i. NWS
ii. Ohio TV meteorologists
iii. NOAA people
iv. AMS people
10. Tutoring math or physics students in order to lose any more meteorology students
11. Fall/Spring cookout – a kickoff cookout and an end-of-the-year cookout
12. Speaking at Middle/High schools
1. Safety training
2. Tornadoes/hurricanes
3. Interactions

Our last meeting is going to be two weeks from today (May 26th). It will occur at 4 pm. We’ll let you know if that changes. Hope your quarter is going well, and see you at the last meeting!

Hey Club,
We will be having a meeting tomorrow, Tuesday May 11th at 4pm up in Scalia. We will be discussing our end of the year social/cookout, goals for next year, t-shirt ideas, and whether or not we would like to make any changes to the existing constitution. Hope to see everyone there. I'm not sure yet about the pizza. I may decide to hold off so we can have a few extra dollars for the cook-out. See you all tomorrow.

Minutes for this week:
Thanks for running and the giving impromptu speeches guys!

Here are the results from the officer elections for the upcoming year:
President - Christopher Redmond
Vice President - Darren Snively
Treasurer - Nicole Grams
Secretary - Nicholas Brammer
Events Coordinator/Social - Ryan Fliehman

Congratulations to all of our new officers, and good luck this fall!

Thanks for a great presentation on your storm chase last June Chip and Darren! You're an inspiration to all aspiring storm chasers.

Geofest is coming up!
Saturday, May 9, 2009
7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
The Dairy Barn Arts Center
8000 Dairy Lane
Athens, Ohio

If you are planning on attending, please RSVP by May 1st (Friday).

We really want to do a social event: we are planning on May 28th, the Thursday after Memorial Day. Definitely a cookout, and the location will be announced in the coming weeks. So make sure you keep this date open---we haven't had any social events this year, and they're usually a whole lot of fun/shenanigans.

Do people support joining the fundraising and treasurer / social and events coordinator? We need to vote on this and make sure everyone will be all right with these offices joining. If we can get these offices combined, it will can be approved and will be appreciated.

Have a great Mom's weekend!

Meteorology Club Meeting Minutes:

Storm Ready – we’re working on getting OU storm ready; let us know if you can do (or have done) anything to help us with this process. There currently sirens on only RTV, Old Baker, Ridges, Biochemistry, Convo, and South Green. These were only installed last fall. We have a lot of room looking for sponsorships; let us know if you can help with this in any way: email Jeff about what you can do.

Jeff is sending a request to the AMS to make us an official chapter this week; after this occurs, we’ll just wait to see what their response will be, so keep your fingers crossed and say thanks to Jeff for getting that ready for us.

New storm spotter training: March 7th from 1-5 pm in Dayton. Because the one that we attended last quarter was more focused on hydrometeorology, this course will help us with getting prepared for spring weather.

2009 OSU Symposium: held April 17th. We’ll be attending that as well (it’s free except for helping the drivers with gas and your own lunch). So put this in your calendar.

MATH 269 – if you need a filler class. This is brand new and is called Numerical Math (it is a thorough overview of the MatLab). It’s only twice a week on MW from 3-4. It’s taught by Dr. Young, and he is amazing.

There is also a class being offered that goes over current environmental issues that could be interesting called GEOG 241 that will take place 10-12 MW. It would be a great class to keep up with issues in your field.

We also could be seeing a speaker named Jason Box come down for Earth Day activities next quarter on April 14th. He was interested in us seeing this because his talk pertains to meteorology/climatology. He says he will 'rock this house' so try to come by and see this next quarter, it looks pretty good!

5K this Saturday morning at 9 AM in front of Walter - we need at least three people from a club, and whoever does best (average time) gets a prize! So if you want to do it let us know (unfortunately it's also $25 so we're sort of iffy on it). But please let us know if you were planning on or are interested in this. We have other marathons coming up next quarter, so we'll keep you updated!

Okay, next meeting will be two weeks from today—Tuesday, March 3rd at 4 p.m. Don’t miss it!

Two weeks ago we mainly talked about the Phoenix trip (though we saw a great video that former Met Club President Nick Engerer had from his experience with Hurricane Ike last year), so here are the very important things we discussed during the meeting this week:

We've narrowed down to 3 candidates for the new meteorology teacher position, and we want them to come into three of our meeting to meet us so we can see who we might be learning from for the next few years. Remember, this decision will shape the department for decades to come, so it is AMAZINGLY IMPORTANT! These dates are to sit down with candidiates so we can be involved in this process.

Tentative dates: 2:15--3 PM on January 26 (Mon), January 28 (Wed), or Feb 2 (Mon)

All have a climatological background. CThe first candidate will present a Colloquium next Monday (26th) at 4:10 in Clippinger 119. Please try to attend this!

We are looking at putting out an advertisement in The Post, which could benefit our website (since they use Scalia Lab for their weather forecasts), and could promote the department and the club.

Nicole and Jeff, have fun at the SAC funding workshop tomorrow!

Gamma Theta Epsilon - the national Geography honor society induction ceremony is next week; you need a 2.7 overall GPA, and a 3.0 geography GPA. If you are interested BY TODAY email Becky oussc.org...it was due at 5, but if you do it now you can still get it!

Charlie Woodrum, an intern at the NWS forecasting office in Wilmington, OH (though from the Charleston area) is helping us get the ball rolling on getting Ohio Universit storm ready. Travis will take the initiative to email Andrew Powers for funding to place NOAA weather radios throughout campus so we can predict storms that may be approaching the area. This is very important to the Club.

We are also looking about making the university an official AMS chapter, since the closest one is a couple hours away. This would be a tremendous addition to our department and would bring us many opportunities and make our access to all things AMS much easier. We would no longer be the "Meteorology Club" but "AMS Chapter at Ohio University" which would give us a chance to show others at AMS conferences what we do and promote the department more.

Millersville University in PA has been the Student Chapter o the Year for the past 2-3 years running (we met some of these people in Phoenix), and they are a great inspiration: not only are they involved in many fundraising activities, but they also put out a newsletter 1-2 a month! These are great ideas that we could incorporate into our program as well, such as severe weather awareness programs to local schools (volunteering) and such. Not onyl that, Dr. Isaac has the idea to hand out handstamps or flyers with information to the Scalia Lab website and forecasts as well.

This would also give us a chance to attend the Northwest Indiana National Weather Association Great Lakes Meteorology Conference towards the middle of March, which about 80-100 people attend in northwest Indiana. We of course always attend the symposium at OSU, but this would be a great opportunity for us. It costs $50 to attend, but it's at the end of spring break, so let us know if you're interested! There is also a weather conference in Pittsburgh on March 21st, which is also the beginning of spring break. Please give us your opinions on which one (or both) that you would like to attend!

We are also looking intot having a game night or move night. If anyone is interested, email Jeff and let us know! We can come up to the Scalia Lab and order pizza, watch a movie or play games---just let us know, we are very interested in doing a lot with the Club! We are stable at 15 members, but we don't want to just float through the year---we are interested in even more members and achieving a lot of these ideas in order to promote the club and therefore the department!

Chip and Jeff also had the idea of putting up forecasts on the televisions in Baker (as you're going up the escalators) would really help a) promote the lab and b) help get information more thoroughly to the university population. We are trying to get a hold of Baker reps, but if anyone knows how to speak to people in Baker, let us know!

Darren is also looking into getting magnets that we could give away that promote the club, and we coudl give them to fellow students and people in the Geography/Meteorology department, which would be fantastic.

If anyone would like to contact someone in Charleston or another candidate for speaking at the club (for this quarter AND next quarter) please let us know. Having guest speakers, benefiting from their knowledge but also letting them know that we're interested in what they're doing will really put a good word out for the department.

So as a recap, Travis is speaking to Andrew Powers as a speaker, Jeff is looking into making us an AMS chapter, and Dan will go into Baker to find out about us posting forecasts through Baker Center. But please offer your help to the club as well, the officers can't be the only ones that work at this. Your help would be highly appreciated!

Next meeting will be two weeks from today, which will be Tuesday, February 3rd at 4 PM. Hope to see you there!

Thanks so much, and keep coming to meetings!

Hey Club,
Sorry for the short notice, but I need to change this week's meeting time to Tuesday (tomorrow the 20th) at 5pm instead of Thursday at 5:15pm because I play intramural basketball at 5:30/6:30 on Thursdays.

Anyways, please try to make it tomorrow because after attending last week's AMS Conference, we have plenty of great ideas to help improve the Met Club's status. Such ideas include: fundraising forecasting contests, establishing Ohio University as both storm ready and as an AMS local chapter, and plenty more.

Also, big news within the Geography Department: OU will be hiring a new meteorologist and has narrowed down the field to three candidates. All three of these people will be coming to OU over the next two weeks and Dr. Sack would like some of us Met students to have the opportunity to meet them. So, we'll be discussing that matter too.

Due to the short notice with the schedule change, pizza will be provided for tomorrow's meeting. Hope to see you all up in Scalia.

Welcome back to Athens for Winter quarter. We have plenty of stuff to talk about which include the AMS conference, speakers, possible trips and fundraising opportunities. So, with that said, we will be having a meeting this Thursday at 5pm up in Scalia Lab. Note: If you are attending the AMS Conference next week, YOU MUST ATTEND THIS MEETING. We will be discussing travel arrangements to Columbus Airport as well as passing out the itinerary for the conference.

Also, Nick Engener, a recent meteorology graduate of Ohio University (2008) and former Met Club President, will be at this week's meeting and has generously offered to talk about his involvement and experience with 2008's Hurricane Ike. He went on a Hurricane Ike intercept with a mobile Dual Polarimetric radar with NSSL vehicles, and got a good amount of video during the intercept, so he and I thought it would be pretty neat to share with the club (as well as help recruit some new members).

So, if you have any friends who are even considering joining the club, please bring them to this week's meeting. It should be a great time. See you all on Thursday at 5pm in Scalia!

The Meteorology hoodies are in! Come pick them up in Scalia Lab this Friday the 14th from 12pm-2pm.

Costs are $25 for just the hoodie and $30 for a hoodie with the writing on the back.

I have seen them, they look awesome!

11-4-08

*****Last Met Club Meeting of the Quarter*****

Everyone needs to make sure they are completely registered for the AMS Conference. If you are not, contact Dr. Isaac ASAP.

Twenty hoodies were ordered: they are grey with green writing, with “Ohio Meteorology” on the front. There is an option of “We do it on TV” on the back. $25 without the writing on the back, and $30 if you do want the writing. We are taking payments now, even though the hoodies are not available until next week, just contact Jeff or Nicole to turn in the money.

Anyone who hasn’t scheduled and needs help with theirs or needs some advising, let us know, our older students are very willing to help! We have our old schedules that we can share with you.

Also let us know if there are any students who have taken 302 who are not currently signed up for 304, Travis would appreciate a couple more students. Plus if you would like to forecast for 305, let him know so he can get you in!

There is an awesome looking class that is being offered for the first time next quarter called the Geology of Natural Disasters (Geol 135). Try to get in if you’re interested, it looks great! 11-12 pm TWRF, 4 credit hours.

Wendy Parker – Philosophy 490 (Climate Change and Numerical Modeling) is being offered. If you don’t have 5 prereq Philo classes (which you probably don’t…) just talk to her and she can pink slip you in as well. She’s an amazing professor so take advantage of this opportunity! We’re trying to get her as a speaker for next quarter as well, we’ll let you know about that as well.

We’re going to be doing a few fundraising events next quarter too, and are looking at working for Parking Services at Women’s basketball games. So keep your schedules open so we can get together for that soon. We’re trying to get more involved in things winter quarter, so keep this in mind.

Kirk Greenfield – if anyone could send him an email before the end of the quarter,. We’d love to get him down as a speaker, get some food (that is not pizzaJ) and hear what he has to share with us for an hour or so.

Mike Ferian – for those who do not know him, he was the former Associate director for Scalia Lab the past couple of years, and just got a job working for a wind company out in San Diego, AND he will also be defending his thesis next week, so wish him congrats/luck if you see or talk to him!

We’ll keep you updated on hoodies, so plan on picking those up (and paying for them) before the end of the quarter! That’s about it, so make sure to have a safe and happy Winter break!

10-21-08

AMS Conference
- If you are going to AMS in January, you need to come see Dr. Isaac on Monday afternoon to fill out a form (ps. make sure not to choose the weeklong option). If you want to go still, you need to let us know NOW, because we are cancelling our third room.

Hoodies
- We'll be ordering sweatshirts in the next week or so, since there's a nice cold front coming through Monday. It should be in the $20-30 range, definitely not more than 30, and will be grey with green writing. If you were not at the meeting today, make sure to email Jeff and let him know if you want one and what size you would like. If you have any ideas for future t-shirts (with like a funny meteorology saying or something), let us know, we'd like to hear your ideas.

Winter Scheduling
- If you need any help with scheduling your classes next year that will be appropriate for whatever year you are, please let us know. There are a lot of older students in the Met Club who can help you and know what you need to take, so please utilize our guidance!

Met Club Social
- We're meeting on October 30th at 7 PM on Thursday night at Buffalo Wild Wings! We're going to watch a game, order some wings, etc, so come down that night, we're a great bunch to hang out with.

Who would like to meet with Dr. Wendy Parker? She's a philosophy professor and the Geography department is trying to get her to speak to us. She received her undergrad in Meteorology and Philosophy and would be a great professional to hear from. We'd like to hear her speak, and we'll keep you updated on any lectures she may be giving!

As far as scholarships go, applying for next year, we're going to have a meeting next quarter about the Hollings or an AMS undergrad. Anyone who's interested in applying or has had it before, please keep this in mind, it would really help you (and others, for those who have had it) out!

Let us know if you have any ideas for socials, and we'll keep you updated.

Happy 21st birthday Ryan!!!!

Next meeting will not be until after Halloween, probably November 4th, and will most likely be our last meeting.

Hope your quarter is going well! Have a safe Halloween!

Savannah Collins

Just a reminder that we will be meeting tomorrow, Tuesday the 21st at 5:00pm up in Scalia. We will be discussing the AMS Conference and making sure anyone who is going is on track with scheduling/registering. Also, we will be discussing ideas for hoodies and a potential fall social/movie event. Any student who has scheduling or advising questions for Winter '08, feel free to ask them tomorrow or at the next meeting. Last, we'll be deciding fundraising ideas, possible speakers and potential trips to other conferences. Pizza will be provided again, so I hope to see you all tomorrow.

Our next Met Club meeting will be this coming Tuesday (October 7th) at 5pm in Scalia Lab. We will be finalizing the AMS Conference Trip details, so if you are interested at all in attending, you MUST make this meeting. By the end of Tuesday's meeting, our goal is to have a list of confirmed students who will be attending the AMS Conference in Phoniex. Also, we will be discussing flight itineraries, hotel details and registration details (hotel and registration fee is complimentary courtesy of the Geography Dept). As far a flights go, our goal is to book them as early as next meeting, and no later than November 1st. Since you are expected to pay for your own method of transportation, the longer you wait to book, the higher the prices become. Here is a suggested checklist for those who are interested in the trip.
1. Check to see if you can definitely attend
2. If possible, bring a credit or debit card to the meeting in case we decide to book flights then and there.
3. Confirm all details with me at the meeting.
Finally, the AMS Conference is only one of the topics for discussion next week. We will be discussing other things as well. Please check the latest issue of the Met Club Minutes for details. I'll try to bring pizza this time too. Let me know if you have any questions.

***NO MEETING THIS WEEK*** --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AMS Conference January 10-15, 2009 · Let us know ASAP if you are going, all you need to take care of is airfare, and the longer we wait, the higher priced the airfare will be! · One great thing to get out of the conference will be graduate school applications, mainly for our juniors and seniors, and we’ll bring some back and put them up in the Scalia Lab for everyone interested as well. · We should be carpooling to Akron or Columbus to fly out to Phoenix · Hotel: it’s between a hotel five miles away with a drink plan and a hotel within a half mile of the convention center—we’ll most likely go with the one that’s closer. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Still want a t-shirt? Bring $15 Over the next month, we’ll talk about sweatshirts for the winter! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Advising/tutoring for underclassmen: · If anyone needs to speak with an advisor, try Dorothy Sack, Chris Towe, or Jim Dyer, to name a few teachers · We would like to try going to any courses that are connected with meteorology or geography and offer tutoring sessions for 101 students · We need to help out people who needs it so no one will be discouraged from the major · Help out underclassmen and advising students · If anyone is on a 4-year or 5-year track, could you please print out your classes from the past three years in Excel form and bring it in, specifically Travis Swiger, Dan Miller, Darren Snively, Nick Brammer, Chip Redmond, and Jeff Waters · And as a reminder, the 08-09 catalog has changed, there apparently is a choice between which track one can choose though. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEXT MEETING – We’ll show footage from the Tennessee tornado outbreak and a video showing alum Nick Engerer during one of his tornado chases during his summer 2007 internship! And we’re going to try to have pizza at every meeting, so make sure to try and make it! Jeff will be sending out an email about the times for the next meeting soon. Thanks!

This is the beginning of the new Ohio University Meteorology Club website. It will be located within the ScaliaLab website to simplify things and be sure that it is taken care of.

9-16-08

First meteorology club meeting of 2008-2009 occured today. All information is written and compiled by Savannah Collins the secretary of the Meteorology Club.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About the Meteorology Club: The OU Meteorology Club is open to anyone interested in meteorology, but we’re also here to create majors and minors for those interested in pursuing their education in this program. A lot of these people will be in your classes for the next four years, if you stay with this major, and the club’s main goal is to help advise and tutor freshmen. Classes can be difficult at times and there are a lot of juniors and seniors that would hate to see anyone struggle or leave the major. We also have a lot of access to scholarships, so the main gist is that the club wants to help you stay on track and stay focused. Jeff Waters – Senior - President Darren Snively – Junior – Vice President Savannah Collins – Senior - Secretary Nicole Grams – Sophomore – Treasurer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AMS Conference: last year is was hosted in New Orleans and was great; to see a couple pictures, look at Scalia Lab’s main page! This year is in Phoenix, and anyone who is interested should let us know, it’ll be in mid-January. Last year you only needed to pay for the plane ticket (the conference and hotel was included) so we’ll let you know soon the exact pricing for this year. Embassy Suites for AMS Conference? Miles from convention center with free shuttle. You DO need to be a member of the American Meteorological Society to attend, which if you’re in the meteorology program (or even just really interested in it) you should be anyway, because they’re great for internship opportunities, including Ohio News Networks, which was held by alumni Emily Ruwe last year. Go to www.ametsoc.org for more information and to check out the website. There are also scholarships set up through them, and a big one is the Hollings Scholarship, which pays for $8,000 your junior and senior year as well as a summer internship. These are our Hollings scholars the past few years: 2008: Darren Snively 2007: Jeff Waters 2006: Nick Engerer 2005: Jon Harvey Six OU students out of 100 nationwide won a scholarship, which is huge for our program, so make sure to keep these opportunities in mind if you would like to apply. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Future Met Club activities and info: We can plan socials if you would like, we just need to figure out fundraising of course, but it’s all possible. T-shirts: contact Jeff if you’d like a t-shirt from last year, we have some and can also re-order if anyone would like one. This year, we’re thinking about getting a sweatshirt, which would be too expensive at all, but make sure to give your opinion on it! SPEAKERS this year – anyone you know in Meteorology, Climatology, global warming, let us know, we’d really like to get our program’s name out and benefit from professionals! Plenty of opportunities in Meteorology/Climatology – not just television! There are endless amounts of opportunities. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scalia Lab – www.scalialab.com – check out pictures from Met Club, get the weather for Athens (like current conditions) and tons of models, links, stuff about OU’s program, professors, staff, and alumni! Chip Redmond is also in charge of the lightning update, so check that out as well. Director: Dr. Ronald Isaac Asso. Director: Travis Swiger ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Spotter Training class: there will be a storm spotter class at Athens High School September 29, 2008 at 6 PM. This is free and will be a great experience, plus you get to help out the National Weather Service with recognizing and reporting severe weather conditions! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fundraising ideas? If you have any ideas you would like to share or support – such as selling hot chocolate or even sponsoring something a 5K – let us know! Rutgers was named the AMS club of the year and had a ton of fundraisers, so they’re a great example. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Remember: Next week’s meeting is Tuesday, September 23rd, at 5 PM! There will be cheese and pepperoni pizza provided by Jeff. If there are people in your classes that may be interested, or any meteorology classes you’re in now that you’d like to make an announcement in, let them know! We appreciate it. Have a great week, see you on Tuesday!
